Additional Information

It's 1961 and Palm Beach socialite, irresistible rascal and devoted father Jack Morgan is staging his suicide to shield his beloved daughters from the disgrace of his impending arrest. Next, meet his 5' 11" daughter Charlotte (Charlie), an over-indulged 23 year-old with a BA in art history, struggling to cope with the traumatizing loss of her beloved father, her sister's resulting mental breakdown and the discovery that she's now penniless.
Fortunately Raul, a flirtatious young attorney, appears with much needed ego-boosting and practical advice. As terrified as Charlie is about finding a way to support herself and her sister, she realizes that she has to learn what drove her father to kill himself.
Uncovering that mystery leads to romantic pre-WWII Paris, where handsome lack-luster artist Alan Fitzpatrick (aka Jack Morgan) stops entertaining attractive, wealthy women when he falls in love with a bewitching Jewish girl. Under Nazis occupation, their plan to take their daughters and escape to the US goes tragically awry. In a series of stunning surprises, Charlie uncovers disturbing truths about her father, her own unique latent talent, crimes great and small and a diabolical villain.

Excerpts from reviews of "Exceeding Expectations:"
"Lisa April Smith . . . has woven an intriguingly rich tapestry of delightful well-developed characters into a perfectly balanced plot bursting with riveting mystery, crimes of the petty and the horrible sort, suspenseful twists, and romantic tension complete with love scenes that sizzle and pop." "Set in the varied and stunning backdrops of early 1960s Palm Beach and Manhattan high society, as well as mid-1930s to early 1940s Paris . . ." Cari L. Pedstelak:

". . . it's the authentic details of the time-periods that make it fun to read . . ." "historical and fictitious characters work in sync as they are perfectly set in these time frames, and midst the transitory madness of WWs I and II Paris." "Smith's writing isn't over-blown with emotion and sappy romance; rather, it is sophisticated and subtle." "Witty, fun and sassy." Deborah Previte:

Get past the cover! This is a great book!

Charlie, a girl in her early 20's, is just another over-indulged, wealthy daughter of Palm Beach who's major concerns are horses, parties and gossip. Then, her father commits suicide, her sister has a mental breakdown and her posh step-mother leaves them penniless. The beautiful life comes to a dead halt, and Charlie, who never even learned to wash dishes, has to get a job.

When Charlie sets out to discover why her beloved, pampering father would abandon them, knowingly leaving her sister and her without a means of support, she discovers more than she ever could image about him, herself and her abilities to "exceed expectations." She also discovers that PB society may not always get it right about love and class, when she meets and gets help from the brilliant young lawyer, Andy Garcia clone, Raul. Armed with Raul's encouragement, her own pride and tenacity, Charlie uses her only skill; modelling, to help finance... Read more
Jack Morgan begins the story by staging his own suicide. His daughter Charlie is determined to find out the truth in this fiction book, EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS by author Lisa April Smith.

With a Palm Beach socialite step-mother, too busy keeping up appearances and a sister in a mental hospital, Charlie is left to find out why her father could do such a thing. During the story we are taken on flash backs of her father's playboy life in the art world of Paris where he meets plenty of women including Charlie's mother. I like the way the author went back and forth from both times and filled in the blanks to all the questions I had. This book exceeded my expectations and I am awaiting the second book to the series PARADISE MISPLACED. This book was received for the purpose of an honest review.

Very good book! A real page turner that keeps you in suspense with all the twist and turns in the plot. Very enjoyable read! Highly recommended read! :)
