Additional Information

The nanoSTRIKER is a high quality, ultra-small and completely self-contained waterproof fire starter. Sacrificing neither form nor function, its unique all-in-one design puts all the tools you need to start a fire into one tiny package. To top it off, the rods are replaceable and the striker is ultra-sharp tungsten carbide. Ferrocerium fire starters work best with tinder materials that contain large surface areas: dry grasses, wood shavings, cotton balls, dry leaves, clothing lint, etc. Using a tinder material of your choosing, create a loose tinder bundle to catch the sparks from the ferro rod. Wrap the included lanyard around a few fingers to secure the striker handle. Holding the striking tool at an angle, use moderate pressure to quickly scrape the rod. The striker should be carving material off the ferrocerium rod.

I purchased this item because I wanted to be as light as possible when backpacking. The design is very cool and practical. You can carry it in your pocket or around your neck and you won't even notice it's there. Striking with the NanoStriker can be a mixed bag. If done correctly you can get fairly decent sparks out of it, but it can be frustratingly sparse on the sparks when you need it most. I attribute this to the size of the striker in your hands and the small blade. It just feels dainty and it is. Getting a good amount of spark will require much practice and I never felt confident enough to trust it without taking a handy dandy $5 magnesium cheapo along. The cheapo striker showers my tender with sparks with ease. I hate to call this striker a gimmick because it's designed so well, but when you can get better spark out of a cheap striker you tend to think twice about spending 5 times as much.
As another reviewer noted, the striker is small - as in very small. The part of the striker that you hang on to is 0.6 inches. When your fingers are cold \ wet (as they are bound to be when you need a fire starter the most) it's all too easy to slip your grip on the teeny striker and then you get to watch it fly off into the brush. Also, because of the itsy-bitsy grip on the striker, it's difficult to position properly against the flint in order to get a proper strike. When your hands are shaking from the cold, this means two, three........four....... arrgh......five mis-strikes later and you finally get a good strike - IF you can find the striker that you will have doubtless dropped by now.

What makes this so aggravating is that the rod 'cover' portion is knurled and would make the perfect grip for the striker. But instead of manufacturing the striker in the rod 'cover', Exotac places the removable striker in the rod 'handle' - making the entire device more complex than it... Read more
This is a cool looking ferro rod, not unlike most other Exotac products, but I don't think it functions quite as well as it looks. The striker is VERY small and doesn't work as consistently as other ferro rods I have used, but when you strike it just right, it works very well. This rod is a bit too complex for what it is, i.e. three pieces that screw together.
