Moments before he is executed, the killer of famed Vietnam War hero-pilot Hub Walker's daughter makes a startling allegation: the real murderer is Walker's close friend, a prominent U.S. defense contractor. Walker wants to hire somebody willing to spend a few days hunting up information that will refute the convicted killer's groundless but widely reported claims, and help restore his friend's good name. That somebody, as fate would have it, is sardonic civilian flight instructor, would-be Buddhist and retired military assassin Cordell Logan. Thus begins one of the year's most suspenseful mystery-thrillers.
A Medal of Honor recipient married to a former Playmate of the Year, Walker resides in the swanky San Diego enclave of La Jolla, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Logan is convinced that working for Walker will be little more than a paid vacation - a chance to rub shoulders with a living legend while rekindling Logan's relationship with his own enticing ex-wife, Savannah. But after flying to San Diego in his beloved aging Cessna, the Ruptured Duck, Logan is quickly drawn into a vexing and deadly jigsaw puzzle. The deeper he digs, the murkier the truth appears, and the more in danger he finds himself. Who really killed the war hero's daughter, and why? Somebody in "America's Finest City," wants to stop Logan from asking questions, and will stop at nothing to silence him.

Fangs Out, like Freed's debut Flat Spin, is one of those rare books that is so engaging you'll find yourself binging on it, unable to put it down. Or, you'll experience the classic "I'll just read the first chapter right now," and then come-to hours later, having been sucked into the world of action, intrigue, humor, and romance that Freed has created.
Freed is at his best when he combines intimate, first-hand knowledge of his subject matter--flying, military intelligence, police investigations, etc.--with a hilariously razor sharp wit. I laughed out loud throughout, garnering strange looks from people near me on the airplane where I read much of it and probably suffered bladder damage, since I couldn't tear myself away for a pee break.
David Freed entertains with clever byplay and insightful maxims on how to live and love. His flight instructor character, Cordell Logan, returns after Flat Spin to take on a new mystery that keeps the reader wondering if Logan has any idea what is actually at play. He adopts a cat that keeps him and his droll landlady attending to its whims and insouciant traits. His approach to romantic opportunities is refreshing and enigmatic. The attention to pilot jargon is a bit overdone, but does not deter from the story.

David Freed's second mystery, Fang's Out, is a delight to read that keeps you guessing right to the end. The protagonist Cordell Logan, a flight instructor with a past in covert ops, drew me in with his wry wit, his attempts to hold to Buddhist beliefs that often are at odds with his feelings, and his ability to irritate so many of the people he meets. Other characters were equally well developed.
Fangs Out is an intriguing mystery laced with humor and a touch of romance that I found hard to put down. I hope Mr. Freed is busy on a third installment in this successful series!
