Fear of Heights: How to Face Your Fear, Overcome Acrophobia and Enjoy the Experience with Easy to Follow Steps (Height Phobia, Fear of Flying, Rollercoasters,)
Overcome Your Fear of Heights, Stop Worrying and Start Having Fun
If you’re reading this, you’re probably suffering from a fear that I had all of my life, until a few years ago. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always just been afraid of heights. When I try to think back, I can’t quite pinpoint where this fear first developed. What I can pinpoint, are the embarrassing situations that developed because of it.
When I was in third grade, my class went on a field trip. Everything was going swimmingly until we got to a zip line. One by one, my friends were helped by the supervisors and went down the zip line. Some shouted in joy, others pulled funny faces. Regardless of how they expressed it, all of them had fun. Then it was my turn. I was feeling extremely nervous when I was still waiting in line. The prospect of actually encountering this zip line seemed many things, but fun was not one of them. I thought, however, that I would manage to put a brave face on and just get it over with when my turn came.
When I got to the front of the line, I froze. I couldn’t do it. The supervisors were incredibly kind. They tried to encourage me without putting too much pressure on me. It didn’t help, however. I started crying and eventually was allowed to just skip the zip line. The whole ordeal was very embarrassing at the time. I was about 9 years old. Having all of my friends see me turn into the world’s biggest ball of tears made me feel very vulnerable. It was as if they saw right through me – as if I was naked.
That was probably the worst experience that my (former) fear of heights gifted me with. That is partially because I made a point of avoiding anything even remotely involving me being higher than ground-level. Theme parks in particular were a place I avoided at all costs. When my friends invited me, I’d always have an excuse ready. I felt like I was missing out, but just could not stomach the thought of a day of rollercoasters.
Well, that has changed since then. I’m not going to become a professional sky-diver tomorrow, but I can proudly say that I have conquered my fear. I still feel a sensation when I go on rollercoasters. The feeling, however, is totally different. I enjoy it. It’s not so much fear as it is anticipation. I love the feeling of getting near the top of the ride, knowing that it is going to be fun. In the last two years, I have made multiple trips to my local theme park and gone bungee jumping. Yes – bungee jumping.
I hope you too can conquer your fear and start enjoying heights. That is my aim for this book.
