Incredible tone comes from dual vintage-style Jazz Bass single-coil pickups, and the two-band active EQ has an active/passive mini-toggle switch. Other features include chrome neck pickup cover, knurled chrome-dome knobs on the volume controls and black Jazz Bass knobs on the tone controls, a Badass® Bass II™ bridge and three-bolt neck plate. This the review of the Marcus Miller Jazz Bass made in Japan. There is also one made in USA but it costs about twice as much.
Lets break this down into the Good, Bad, and Ugly.

Good: This is a really pretty bass. I like the 70s blocks. But they are not black like on the typical 70s maple necks from Fender. They are pearl. I also like that the neck is bound which makes it smooth to the touch. It has chrome knobs which are typical of the period and are the same as on my '72 reissue Telecaster thinline. The chrome pickup cover gives it a sweet vintage vibe but you can remove if you feel it gets in the way. The ash body is just something to enjoy look at.

It plays well. The neck and body feel great. The pickups are interesting. The neck pickup is 75 vintage Jazz pickup and the bridge is a "vintage bridge pickup". I can say that they are very responsive pickups. Almost too responsive because I had to change around my playing a bit to reduce the noise... Read more
My Fender 4 string Marcus Miller Jazz Bass is a 2012, the last year these basses were made in Japan. They are now made in Mexico. The Marcus Miller Jazz basses made in the USA are 5 strings (no 4 strings made in the USA). Marcus Miller has recently signed with another bass guitar maker to offer his signature basses. So it is unclear how long Fender will continue to offer his signature basses.

The previous reviewer stated that this bass is noisy. However, mine is dead quite. It also does not overwhelm my amp. Just turn the gain down on the amp. I did notice a scratchy noise when slapping (I have noticed this on several different Fender Jazz basses beside the Marcus). This was caused by my hand hitting the pickguard below the G string when slapping. This was an easy fix. I covered the bottom of the pickguard with copper shielding tape and the scratchy noise was gone.

The bass has excellent playability and feel. It feels and can sound just like my 1976 Jazz Bass. I... Read more
