You know a great literary "voice" when you hear it: David Sedaris' humorous cynicism. Elmore Leonard's weary, smart-mouthed dialogue. Nick Hornby's simple yet imaginative descriptions. It's the kind of writing you should aspire to, right?
Well...not quite. Each of these authors found success in part by developing their own unique voice: a writing style that helped define - and throw the spotlight on - their work.
Now Les Edgerton shows you how to develop a voice of your own, one that rises above the literary din because of its individuality, not in spite of it!
Inside, he provides guidelines, advice and dozens of exercises for recognizing and developing a natural style that will make your characters, stories and dialogue better and more memorable. You'll learn:
- How to make any piece you write unmistakably yours and yours alone - What agents and editors really think about using your own voice - How to write better by ignoring the rules - The keys to getting your voice and personality on the page - How to get back the unique voice you may have lost by trying to write like someone else
Whether you write fiction, non-fiction or poetry, Finding Your Voice is a must for your personal library. Let's face it - editors, agents and readers all want to read something fresh and new. By finding your voice, you'll be giving them exactly what they want!

This book is for aspiring writers not for professional writers. This is an important point, because other reviewers have said this book gives too basic advice. Basic, but paramount.
The basic idea behind this book is that many authors suffer from a terrible affliction. He calls it "the writer's inferiority complex" It results from an overadulation of the published word.
Some might say that it is obvious that one should be original.
The fact is that as aspiring writers we are constanly studying the good stuff, good authors, and we are always studying technique. The result of this is that we have a tremendous and heavy influence to carry on our backs. The danger is real: if we are constantly trying to study the best, we might end up becoming a copy of them. Which, paradoxically, is far from being the best we can.
The solution is simple. Buy this book if you have noticed that you write too much like someone.
The number of books I've read on writing are countless, but this one is in a league of it's own! I was inspired to get back to writing after having read Les Edgerton's brilliant lesson on cultivating and trusting your own voice. Having been stifled by my own self-conscience and a severe lack of confidence, I have begun just writing again. And enjoying it more than I even remember! The exercises Les provides really got me out of my own head and allowed me to let my voice shine through. The examples he gives are relevant, and he has a witty sense of humor. And though I still have a lot of work to do, he has definitely started the juices flowing again. And for that I am more than grateful! I'm ecstatic! Thank you, Les!
I've read quite a few books intended to give advice to new writers, or even old ones. If I had to choose only one book on writing this would be it. "Voice" is one of the most difficult and elusive parts of the writer's craft, and this book will not only tell you what it is, but how to find and develop your own. I cannot recommend it too highly. This book, with Orson Scott Card's book on character and viewpoint, sit next to my dictionary, thesaurus, and English usage reference, ready to hand at my work area.
