Additional Information

FORBIDDEN CITY, USA captures the magic and glamour of a Chinese American nightclub scene that peaked in San Francisco during World War II. Previously unpublished personal stories, along with over four hundred stunning images and rare artifacts, are presented in this sexy and insightful chronicle of Asian American performers who defied racial and cultural barriers to pursue their showbiz dreams. It was the mid-1930s: Prohibition was repealed and the Great Depression was waning. With a global conflict on the rise, people were out to drink, dine, dance, and see a show to forget their woes--and what a surprise for the world to behold an emerging generation of Chinese American entertainers commanding the stage in their own nightclubs. FORBIDDEN CITY, USA reveals the sassy, daring, and sometimes heartbreaking memories of the dancers, singers, and producers who lived this story, and it weaves in a fascinating collection of photos, postcards, menus, programs, and yes, even souvenir chopsticks. Together they recreate a forgotten era, treating readers to a dazzling night on the town.

A truly beautiful book and companion piece to Arthur Dong's 1989 "Forbidden City" documentary on DVD. I saw his film on PBS back in the early 1990's and was intrigued. I wanted to see it again, but PBS stopped showing it. Googling "Forbidden City", I discovered where to buy the DVD; it is available on Amazon and at Mr. Dong's website. I was delighted to see this book published, because there is so much more information about the actors, singers, and performers who worked in the Forbidden City nightclub. It features many beautiful photos, and it serves as an update to the 1989 documentary. Unfortunately most of the people in the DVD have passed on, so Mr. Dong is unable to do any "followup" DVDs on these remarkable entertainers.
I recommend you buy the DVD and the book, because together they offer a fuller picture of this golden era of Chinese/Asian nightclubs. You will see the major players in the DVD and read more about them in this book. Arthur Dong has done a superb job of... Read more
We owe Arthur Dong a huge debt of gratitude for capturing these interviews, this living history, at the time he did. Most of the people who tell their stories in his book have passed away now. As often happens with Chinese history in America, it remains hidden until someone takes the time to reveal its importance to our culture. Dong's book (I haven't seen the documentary yet, but plan to) is more than a history of Chinese entertainers in America, it's a story about the San Francisco Bay Area and farm kids from the agricultural belt of the San Joaquin Valley and Sacramento Delta towns wanted something more than their small world offered them. These kids had grown up typically American during the Depression, but when they put themselves on stage for all to see, they discovered the stereotypes society expected of them. Not just from whites...they were hit even harder at that time by old-fashioned Chinese ideas of modesty and morality. So they got it from both sides. All... Read more
What a find! This beautifully illustrated book introduces readers to the amazing and colorful personalities associated with with the San Francisco Chinatown nightclub scene of a bygone era. Without Arthur Dong's passion for collecting photos and memorabilia this exquisite book could not have existed in its current format. It's presented in a way that produces a nostalgic feeling as it draws you into the world of Chinese forerunners of the entertainment industry. Page by page from beginning to end, it is both entertaining and informative. It belongs on the shelf of every library in the country. .
