By the summer of 2011, Senator George Vincent, a Democratic senior senator from Ohio and staunch supporter of the president in 2008, realized that he could support neither the president nor the likely nominee of the Republican Party in the upcoming 2012 election. The senator had come to the conclusion that the leadership of both political parties was far too close to the extremes of each party. No one running for the presidency represented his views of and for the United States of America. Senator Vincent formed the American Exceptionalism Party and spent every waking hour, collected every political marker he had earned during his political career, and invested most of his personal wealth to legally qualify his fledgling little political party in every state. The Senator found an unknown vice presidential candidate and easily prevailed in every primary race of his own political party in the winter and spring of 2012. Few knew of or followed the primary campaign of this new American Exceptionalism Party and of those who did, most viewed the campaign as nothing more than hubris. With the first nominating convention of the American Exceptionalism Party days away, a few politically savvy voters and academicians began to ponder the possibility that Senator George Vincent and his nascent political party could strike a chord with the voters. From Three to Five is the story of the country's journey into the world of three serious political parties with its resulting political and Constitutional mayhem.

Hank Adler's book is a fast read, with an intriguing look at some of the complexities of a presidential race involving three major candidates. An Obama-like character runs for re-election in 2012; his opponent is an isolationist modeled roughly after Ron Paul; a moderate Democratic (but hawk on foreign policy; critical of the incumbent's very weak foreign policy) runs as a centrist alternative. Some very well drawn characters in this book. Anyway, no candidate gets a majority in the electoral college, and the election is thrown to the U.S. House, which has difficulty making a choice.
Adler wants us to warn us about the difficult constitutional issues. But would this really be a constitutional crisis? I don't think so. The constitution does account for such eventualities. It would be a rare, unusual, dramatic, and even stressful occurrence, but nothing that is not accounted for in the constitution.
One premise of the book is that a third party becomes...
This is a must read for any American who considers themselves informed. I learned so much about our country's Constitution that I never would have known without reading this book. The author unveils his wisdom of what the "rules" dictate about a viable third-candidate through the journey of the American Exceptionalim Party and a candidate that a majority of American's today would surely support. From this new party's secret supporters to the newsroom expert critics, every dramatic angle of the AEP's success or failure is covered in this witty political commentary. I must recommend From Three to Five to anyone remotely interested in politics, government, and the future of our nation.
From Three to FiveReview from Owen-This is a well written look at what our political system has come to. Though written months ago it is so current that it could have come from today's newspapers and magazines. Mr. Adler has not made friends at the West Wing or Capital Hill and probably will not be allowed on Oprah's book club list. But the book takes a hard look at the disfunction in Washington. It also looks at the consequences of a strong third party running good candidates. A must read for all students of our constitution and political history. I have recommended the book to my friends and family. So will you after you read it.
