With the sounds of Country music permeating in the UK after the success here of the hit television series 'Nashville', people both within and outside the music business have been asking - where are Britain's home-grown Country stars? Ward Thomas may well be providing some of the answers. They are on the threshold of becoming one of the first genuine major British Country acts. Ward Thomas are 20-year old twin sisters Catherine and Lizzy Ward Thomas from Hampshire. Whilst in sixth form, a rough demo of the Ward Thomas track Footnotes found it's way into the hands of two respected Nashville session musicians, leading to the recording of a debut album 'From Where We Stand that could spearhead a UK Country sound.

This is a fantastic album mixing up-tempo songs and ballads, all of them original songs written or co-written by the twin sisters, except for a cover of Dougie MacLean's Caledonia. The production is excellent. Although the album features British songs and singers, the sisters found some American producers and musicians to help them fulfil their ambitions. Vince Gill is among the listed musicians.
At first glance, Hampshire seems an unlike source of country singers, but outside the urban areas centred on Southampton, Portsmouth, Aldershot, Winchester and Basingstoke, there are plenty of rural areas, The sisters were raised on a livestock farm away from all the hustle and bustle. They say that farm life is much the same anywhere. I'm not sure about that (climate and landscape are huge factors), but there are some similarities.

I seldom find a CD where I love so many of the songs. Usually that's been from groups like the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and individuals such as Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel. or Cary Simon. I believe this CD is as good as has been produced by great artists like the ones I just listed. Their lyrics are so beautiful and original. And when the two of them harmonize it sends me to heaven.
Debut cd from Catherine & Lizzy Ward Thomas. Push for the stride is the track being played on the radio at the moment, but there are some other good tracks as well. Hopefully it won't be too long before the girls release a follow up cd. If you like music with a country kick, then this could be for you.
