Let's be clear - this is an instrument for less than $40. I have many years of playing piano, guitar, and various other instruments. After picking up my mandolin recently, I decided I would like to give a violin a try. After looking through reviews and reading comments, I decided to gamble $40 on this one. It makes a really steady sound and reverberates well. It is not a professional instrument, by any means, but it is also far above a toy. The tuners work and everything functions as it should. It was shipping strung, but they were loose, so there were no problems with that for me, unlike another reviewer. I also have not had any issues with the tailstock like some of the other reviewers. There are a few blemishes with the finish, and a few places where the stain just didn't get into the corners, but they are not glaringly noticeable. For the price, I am extremely satisfied.
I'm a little sentimental because this is my first violin ever (which also probably means you should take my review with a grain of salt, as I do not yet know what makes a good or bad violin), but so far, I love this thing.
I was worried that it would come in parts--without the bridge attached, without the strings attached, or worse, with the strings broken, with the tuners messed up, etc., etc.--but all of my fears proved unfounded. When I took the violin out of its shipping package, it was safely tucked away in a very nice little case. I opened the case and found a beautiful, wooden violin with the bridge perfectly in place, the strings perfectly in tact, all the tuners--the fine tuners and those on the scroll--still in place, and, at least to my untrained ear, it sounded fairly well tuned. The bow was also in the case, along with rosin, straps for the case, and an extra set of strings.
Literally the only adjustment I had to make upon pulling out the violin was...
It has needed a few little fixes, as in, the tail piece needed to be replaced, it was shipped with the strings on so they snapped when tightened, and the sound peg had fallen by the time it came. however, once these things were all dealt with (and it did NOT cost that much!) i was left with a wonderful instrument that is a pure joy to play. Her voice is lovely, though perhaps has a slightly immature sound to it (nothing like my 100 year old fiddle!) but it is certainly a great buy!
