The author writes in a way that explains the corporate concepts in a real-world fashion. As an operations manager I have been exposed to the concepts the book describes without understanding how much I truly understood. Barney's explanations tied the business concept to the job knowledge and left me with a clear and expanded view of the company and why the company makes the decisions it does. This is a superior product to what other similar strategy textbooks have provided me. The theory was there, but the emphasis was on big words not on complete real-world understanding. I strongly recommend this book for those who are studying strategic management and competitive advantage. I also strongly recommend finding second-hand copy here on Amazon as it was an excellent value and it delivered ahead of schedule.
If you need a book on competitive advantage this is a very good one to have. It gives a different perspective than other strategy books and breaks down the analysis into individual steps.
The style of writing does get a little technical and it's not always clear what to do with the information given. Perhaps that is just my limitation in reading ability.
This is a great book - more for what it organises than what it adds as new ideas.
Barney sets a model for Competitive Advantage (VIRO) and them compares strategic models as potential sources. It places many of the modern attempts in perspective. Without this starting understanding, the modern gurus (Hamel) are almost impossible to apply as their ideas lack the perspective on the role of strategy within an organisation and within all of the other management tools.
It places Michael Porter within a framework where his work can be better used.
For managers and post graduates, this book sets out the fundamentals of strategy and where it can take you.
Not cheap (by a long way) but a fair price for the knowledge.
