The German conquests of Norway and especially France made the U Boat War against the Allies much easier since the captured ports were closer to the convoy shipping lanes. The bunkers built to protect the U Boats in harbor were massive and survived everything that the Allied planes could throw at them.

This book is loaded with B&W photos to show just how much went into creating safe bunkers for the German submarines. There are brief narratives about each port (Bruges, Brest, Lorient, St. Nazaire, La Pallice, BordeauxBergen, Trondheim and Valentin). These fortifications still stand today simply because it is easier to work around them than destroy them. The French still use some to this date. La Pallice was used in the film "Das Boot". The one in Trondheim (Norway) is open to visitors.

This book is very interesting and helpful to any navy buff, those interested in all aspects of the U-Boat war. I highly recommend this book, it is really enlightening to see how many... Read more
An excellent overview of the German Uboat Bunkers of WW2.
The drawbacks for me was the lack of internal diagrams & historical detail I was searching for.
The photo's the researcher has found are excellent , particularly the more recent ones taken as a pair of backpackers explore the old bunkers still existing.
The text is dry ..looking at the design specs & the building of the bunkers & plans for the future.
What perhaps it needed was a look at the indivdual history of each bunker & the way it tied into the changing fortunes of war.
But for 20 -30 pages a wealth of information is imparted.

Excellent book - very well researched, plenty of archival photos and diagrams - a great addition to your library, especially if you are a WW2 fortifications buff like I am!
