The bread bag s origin dates back to the Prussian armies of Fredrick William I of Brandenburg, although its adoption by the German army in its definitive form did not occur until 1931. Of simple construction but with a very pure form, it was present in all the German armies and political organizations. Its function was as a container for the daily food rations, including the bread that gave it its name, as well as cutlery and cap in one of two compartments.
