This is GSH near the end of his life performing with a jazz combo almost 2 hours of his recent material. Anyone hoping for a live performance of his classic legendary works, both spoken word and singing, will be disappointed. There is not a single song from his most creative period from 1970-85.
At the time he performed this he had done several stints for drug possession and was fighting AIDS, a battle he eventually lost. His voice is ravaged here, a complete change from the bold tones of his early years.
Yet if this were anyone but GSH, one would say this is still a fairly good jazz combo, tight, and led by a soulful introspective singer. It's only by comparison to his brilliant early years that this suffers.
The link between Jazz and the Blues is called Gil Scott-Heron.
GS-H slow grooves melodic with his mostly Jazz players in a basement café most likely on the left bank of Paris, and brings the delighted, astonished, totally amazed audience of a several hundred to a mesmerizing bebop, show waltz blues saturated music. More heads are bobbing, arms wailing, and fingers snapping to every note grooved reached.
When GS-H passed away in 2011, a treasure was lost, but thanks to vid-tech, his music still lives on, especially in this video.
Wearing a Wi-Fi cap, and along on stage with about a half-dozen band-mates, GS-H with his band seems to search and find time and time again that slow groove. Dressed up on stage, as a down and out forgotten lost soul of generations of yesteryear, both from the eras of Jazz and the Blues, GS-H, I believe, succeeds in his task of mending two art musical forms into one. Let's just call his style Jazzy Blues.
This is an amazing performance by the late, great Gil Scott-Heron. For those who don't know him, just think: street poet, world poet, revolutionary poet, unbelievable talent. Just put this-- you don't even need to watch it... work, do things around the house, good vibes and great tunes one after the next. Plus!-- He has a message (just in case a large portion of the mainstrream musicians/lyricists have forgotten, there can be more to making music than a 4/4 beat, lyrics about girlfriends, gold, gunshots, i.e. noise.
