Additional Information

What is there to see in Glacier National Park after the sun goes down? As writer and photographer John Ashley reveals in his newest book, some of Glacier's most awe-inspiring sights are found high above the mountaintops. Readers will marvel at Ashley's spectacular color photographs of favorite Glacier landmarks such as Chief Mountain and St. Mary Lake lit by the Milky Way, northern lights, and a universe of wonders. These images complement Ashley's text, which includes clear explanations of astronomical phenomena, traditional Blackfoot stories, Glacier National Park geology and history, and entertaining tales of his own run-ins with curious critters and park rangers. Ashley rallies readers to combat light pollution, a problem that has begun to erode the ancient beauty of one of the last truly dark places in the country.

Full disclosure: A long time ago, I went to high school with John. We both became photographers and have led vastly different careers.

Starting in 1979, he was my mentor—both at the yearbook and later at the newspaper where he worked as a staffer and I was later a stringer (first job actually taking photos, for me). John disappeared one day, heading off to Montana to become a naturalist. But he also kept his cameras, documenting the Montana wilderness instead of the small town in central Florida that had formerly been his beat as a newspaper photographer.

Twenty five years later, this book is the result. The photos are gorgeous. Knowing John that comes as little surprise. But there is a lot more here that makes it much more of a meaningful read for anyone who is interested in both photography and nature.

Wrapped around the spectacular photography are essays, some seat-of-the-pants how-to, and enough science to get you by (and whet your appetite... Read more
A truly beautiful book by an outstanding photographer and writer. Too many nature photographers simply point their cameras at nice looking subjects, trip the shutter and then rely on software to make a decent photo. Not Ashley. His work is superbly crafted from the get-go, and it shows in his finished work. These are all exceptional, beautiful photographs, and Ashley complements them with well-written, entertaining and informative text. If you love Glacier or the night sky, you'll love this book.
Thank you John for this amazing book!!! (I don't personally know him, though I now know pieces of his soul). By far one of the BEST books that I own. Utterly breathtaking photos of the night sky (and more), plus he's a great writer, fun and witty. I find myself at a loss for words to describe just how much I love this book. If you are a true nature enthusiast, if God has given you that gift, I am sure you will love this book. THE COLORS! The light!!! A brilliant portfolio of Heaven on Earth.
