Going Deeper with New Testament Greek is an excellent intermediate Greek grammar many reasons: - The authors successfully walk the fine line between writing simply and writing simplistically, which is extremely important for a grammar aimed at amateurs. Many students of the language have probably read a grammar that seems to be twice as long as it needs to be or, on the other hand, far too short to get a firm grasp on the concepts being explained. Going Deeper avoids both pitfalls. - Similarly, the writers clearly knew their audience. Many Greek grammars are written by scholars for scholars who probably don’t need them in the first place. Going Deeper is written and structured for the student, using language and examples that amateur readers of Greek at all stages can understand. - Unlike some popular intermediate grammars, Going Deeper explains the examples it gives, helping the reader to develop his own competency in the language rather than simply trusting...
This is an excellent intermediate grammar. When I received this book I immediately turned to the last three chapters. These chapters go beyond basic grammar and syntax. These chapters make the volume worth purchasing even if you have Wallace. In addition to strict grammatical material, this volume includes helpful introductions to sentence diagramming, discourse analysis, and textual criticism. It concludes with practical advice for using and keeping the knowledge and skills that Greek students work so hard to acquire. My only issue is that the physical quality of the book seems questionable. The paper is low quality, yellowish and easy to tear. I have had the book only for a week, it is possible that it may hold up. Buy it for the content, but handle it with kid gloves.
After completing a year of introductory Greek, students need additional help to bridge the gap in order to read Greek texts. Kostenberger, Merkle, and Plummer have contributed a wonderful book that helps to meet this need. Rather than a student purchasing a reader and a grammar, the authors coalesce these often separate types of text into a single volume, making Greek acquisition cheaper. Each chapter concludes with guided reading, in which the authors explain confusing syntax, parse perplexing forms, and provide guidance with interpretation. The book covers the major aspects of intermediate Greek. Thus, if a student works through this book, he or she will have the necessary syntactical foundation in order to comfortably read the GNT. A benefit of this text, in contrast to Greek Grammar Beyond the Basics, is its student-friendliness. Wallace's text is very detailed and through, almost to the expense of usefulness to the lower-intermediate student. Whereas, Going Deeper with the Greek...
