I live in Houston and there are very few good mysteries set here so I was excited to find this one with some great reviews. Or not. I finally understand all the crazies who hate it when their town is geographically wrong. Please use an imaginary place if you cant get the details right. Also, the mega-preacher parallel really kind of ticked me off. From the education to the venue, there were some pretty strong similarities and that's just wrong. Don't base characters, esp bad ones, on real people. As for the story...or multiple stories, dont bother. The narration shifts, the story shifts, red herrings are dangled and yet instead of getting more interesting, all this just bogs the story down. If you read a lot, it is just too meh and predictable. The premise had promise but failed to deliver and the reviews and teasers...sheesh...nothing close to what is between the covers. Take a houseful of unlikable characters, a past tragedy, a uninterested police force, and you've got well,...
(No spoilers) I was pretty excited about this after it made a Top 10 List in Entertainment Weekly. It's just not very good. The parts with the mother as the narrator were the only readable parts, and the others switched back and forth so fast with new character names and aliases for the same person, that it was hard to keep track. There was a lot of gratuitous bad language thrown in (out of nowhere) that made me think it was a suggestion from the editor to make it seem more "real." The "bombshell" ending was meh, and then it was over. I was glad to be finished with it. Choose something else.
I always hate to write a bad review, so I won't. I will just say that the comparisons of this book to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train are way off base. It's not even in the ballpark of those two superbly written novels. It's pretty mediocre and lacks any kind of real suspense. Maybe her next novel will be better. I hope so, because I think she has some talent. It just doesn't show much in this book. And I do wish that the folks who write book blurbs would stop comparing every other thriller to Gone Girl. It just ain't so and it actually hurts the author they are reviewing when it isn't as good.
