This used to be my youngest brother teacher. He died and my brother wanted all the CDs I could find, He loves them. I have not heard them.
In serious piano circles the buzz about this live recording (cf. Richter's titanic 1958 Sofia recital) was particularly intense. The cult figure, a pianist's pianist, Michel Block had already rather bested the popular Alicia de Larrocha in his controversial and luxuriant recordings of her showpiece the Albeniz IBERIA. And now came Block in recital a mere five years after her definitive (second) GOYESCAS. Larrocha seemingly owned this cycle (Op. 11 from 1911) in perpetuity through her direct connection to the authentic Granados performing style via her mentor the Granados pupil Frank Marshall.

Block's unique temperamental credentials were perhaps superior, less peninsular and more cosmopolitan and eclectic. Born to French parents in Antwerp in 1937, Block grew up in Mexico where he learnt an important New World variant of the authentic Spanish piano idiom.
