I previously owned the Grado sr80i's, but the 3.5mm plug broke, so it was time to get some new Grado's. I was going to buy the new sr80e's, but I decided to go for a higher end headphone. The old rs2i's came with a 1/4 inch jack, but these came with a 3.5mm jack with an adapter to 1/4 inch. However the 3.5 mm jack is beefed up compared to the old one which is nice because that was the breaking point on my old Grado's.
FIT: When I put them on, I noticed that they weren't as comfortable as the sr80i's, which was a disappointment. But I can still listen to them for an hour or two before I need to take them off. I considered the g-cush pads, but when I contacted Grado, they recommended not using the g-cush pads and instead that I gently bend the headband for a better fit.
SOUND: The sound quality is fantastic right out of the box. The treble is extremely detailed, and never harsh. The midrange is clear, clean and smooth, probably their biggest strength. The bass...
These headphones are absolutely amazing in their accuracy and clarity. I cannot listen to some of my favorite music any other way after adding these cans. A word of warning though: accuracy and clarity are not necessarily always desirable. If the source is not clear (either low bit rate or mastering) this will be more pronounced. The 'Stones are an example - the highs are clipped even in the remasters, which comes out as a little too harsh on the Grados. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD650s which is better suited for this.
**Updated 7/19/15** Verdict: Still a 5* product. I would encourage anyone with the budget to get these headphones without hesitation. I decided to run my headphones through some rigorous testing (again I reiterate I am not a sound engineer or in the music business, but I love listening to music). I used spotify with the extreme (320 bit rate) setting that comes with the premium membership as my benchmark to get the best streaming quality available to me. All my music is served via streaming services or digitally via itunes. I tested my Grado RS2e against my new Bowers & Wilkins P7, Beats Pro, AudioTechnica, AKGs and Shure headphones. I played several types of music genres, including classical, opera, pop, techno, hip hop, jazz, etc. And time and again these headphones beat out all the rest or came in a close second. I did this test accompanied by my friend who is a trained musician to get a real musician's perspective. And she agreed with me. These headphones can't be beat. If...
