The suicide of Madeleine Heron’s husband leaves her at her sister’s lake house for the summer, until she can ‘sort things out’ for herself and find a new direction, but life in the lake community is anything but conducive to calm; right away a three year old girl goes missing from the dam, Madeleine is nearly assaulted when her truck breaks down, and she discovers her neighbors have an affinity for digging holes and burying things in their yard, usually things they find floating in the lake, like a hand, or an arm… Native American conservation officer Eris Renard appears to be the only sane person around, and without warning Madeleine finds herself falling for him, but he’s an adopted Indian who’s just found his birth mother, a famous artist who hates Madeleine.

I wish I had read the comments of the other people who rated this book with one-star before I downloaded it. SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT: I am still disgusted by what happened to the little girl. Yes, everyone is aware that things like this happen in the "real world," but I read fiction as a bit of an escape. I expected a bit of a thriller/suspense mixed in with the romance, but as someone else stated, the description of what happened was just a bit too graphic for me. If I want to hear about the atrocities that happen in life, I can watch the evening news.
To the author's credit, I agree that the story was well-written. I would have rated it higher based on that, but I just couldn't because I really did "hate it" unfortunately. I agree with a couple of others who stated that the book was not entertaining, and this was a depressing group of twisted characters. Unfortunately, the fact that the author crafted a well-written story just didn't overcome the bad...
I debated three or four stars on this. Yes, there's some graphic content and I'm glad I read the warnings and reviews first. However, I did not feel it was as bad as many made it out to be - but that may be a genre thing. Had these scenes been in a crime drama, or thriller, or even horror, they would have raised fewer eyebrows. I thought the author did an excellent job of walking the line between offering too much information, and giving a compelling (and chilling, horrifically real) view into the mind of a predator. There were some shaky bits, a few minor inconsistencies and some parts where the POV changed unexpectedly. While these were noticeable, they were not enough to really drag me out of the story. There was a lot going on, so many overlapping and twisted plot lines, and a few loose ends. Those were the things that had me leaning toward three stars. But... The voice and writing were very good. The characters were, for the most part, compelling and likable...
THis was a surprise.... in a bad way.
A recently widowed teacher, who has caught flak from the family of her deceased-suicide husband, and her own family for being insensitive and unfeeling, goes to Green Lake to spend the summer rent free in her sisters cabin. Enough people have capsulated this story that i will stop there and get to the stuff that pullled this basically decent story down from a four star review.
THe child molestation subject matter is revolting. As is the graphic description of what happens to the little girl and her molester's enjoyment of the event. THis book couldnt get pub'd now with this luridity of subject matter. Who needs it?
The attraction betweent the two main characters Eris and Madelines's is awkwardly handled. I cringend in places. And the unprotected sex between uncommited partners is distasteful, and a little graphic for this sort of novel.
Bottom line, unless you have a really strong stomach i would give...
