This is it. Geoff Johns epic conclusion of 9 years in the making (10 if you count Johns setting up Hal's return) and it has left a large mark in the modern age for comic fans and old Green Lantern fans like myself. Everything has been building up to this moment where Johns finally gives it everything he's got and ties up just about (not all of them, but most) all of his massive work he's done on GL since he started into this final volume that is fitting for the title, "The End". For Johns doesn't also end his tenure with Hal Jordan, but also, what possibly might be the end of GL when the day the comic ceases to exist. Does Johns nail the landing? He nails it, but he comes in rough. *I'll keep it spoiler free and And the "Wrath of the First Lantern" arc, I will not cover it for this volume, but I will cover it for the First Lantern book when it comes out next year*.
GREEN LANTERN VOLUME 3: THE END collects issues #0, and #13 - #20. After the end of...
This volume of Green Lantern brings to an end a nearly ten-year run of stories written by Geoff Johns, one of the star writers at DC Comics. The story follows from the last volume, where Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Sinestro have been sucked into Black Lantern's ring, where they inhabit the Dead Zone. Most everyone there is really dead. They still have a bit of living in them, so there's a chance for them to escape.
Meanwhile Jordan's power ring thinks he is dead because it flies off in search of a new Green Lantern. It finds Simon Baz, an Arab-American who has been accused of a terrorist act and is currently being interrogated by the US government. He stole a van (part of a career of car theft) to help out his sister and nephew. Baz discovers the van has a bomb inside so he decides to drive somewhere unpopulated--the car manufacturing plant that shut down and left him unemployed. Naturally the Feds think he has a vendetta against the company and start using tougher...
We already knew that Baz was busted out of Guantanamo by a schizophrenic Green Lantern ring. In this volume we learn how Baz came to be mistaken for a terrorist. The story of Baz and his family opens the volume, and it's the best writing I've seen in this series. Unfortunately, after about 40 pages, we're back to the story of the goofy Guardians and their Borg-style plan to assimilate everyone in the universe into a single group mind. Despite the size of the universe, they think they can do this in a few months. Ambitious blue dudes, the Guardians! And when the Justice League shows up, everyone gets all chatty so readers with short memories can be reminded of what happened earlier. Additional internal summaries add to the page count. We're even treated to a biography of Hal Jordan and his various battles with evil and with himself (and with multicolored Lanterns), which serves as a reminder of how silly some of the Green Lantern storylines have been over the years.
