Additional Information

In early February of 1968, at the beginning of the Tet Offensive, Private First Class Gregory V. Short arrived in Vietnam as an 18-year-old US Marine. Amid all of the confusion and destruction, he began his tour of duty as an 81mm mortarman with the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, which was stationed at Con Thien near the DMZ. While living in horrendous conditions reminiscent of the trenches in World War I, his unit was cut off and constantly being bombarded by the North Vietnamese heavy artillery, rockets, and mortars. Direct, honest, and brutal in his observations, Short holds nothing back in describing the hardships of modern warfare and our leaders' illusions of success.

History/Military Book Club Selection, 2012, Branson Stars and Flags Book Award, 2012; the book is published by University of North Texas Press.

I just finished reading this fine book and I found it to be most enlightening. Mr. Short has done an exemplary job of placing the reader right out in the bush. I could feel his terror with every page. There's also lots to laugh about, as he relates events that are so typical of soldiers caught in the cross-hairs of battle. He, and all his fighting comrades deserve our utmost appreciation for their sacrifices, not just those who died in defence of our country, but many more who suffered from their ordeal, long after they returned to civilian life. They certainly have mine. Highly recommended. Thanks, Gregory Short, for giving us such an effective, detailed, well-documented memoir of what you and your fellow Marines endured.
This book is written in plain english - As a Vietnam Veteran myself I thought the book was on the money.
book was a good read. his facts seemed creditable, no hero, just doing his job. Easy read, a good view of the way it was.
