I put these Grover machine heads on my MIM Fender Standard Jazz bass. The stock ones were not terrible but they were a bit rough turning and seemed to go out of tune more often than on other basses I have had. I am very pleased with the Grovers. They are heavier built than the stock ones and look and feel higher quality with a nice finish and good quality castings. The Grovers feel a lot smoother turning and stay in tune better than the stock heads. Also the Grovers were fairly easy to install and fit well except that only two of the four mounting screw holes on each head fit with existing holes. I drilled two new holes for each and the old holes were covered by the bigger mounting surface of the Grovers. I did not notice a significant change in the sound of the bass. I think that the Grovers are a good value and gave my bass a higher quality look and feel.
I used these to replace the tuners I had on my Stagg electric upright bass. The gears have more teeth and are bigger, which means they are stronger, turn easier and won't break as easily. There are 18 gear teeth on the Stagg tuner, but 22 teeth on this Grover tuner. The holes for the mounting screws lined up exactly. A drop of oil in the mechanism and a few turns to distribute the lubricant will result in long-term ownership decreased frustration, costs, and trips to your luthier. I noticed Grover has some gold-plated tuners that I'm now thinking about getting. They also have black chrome models. Tough to beat a Grover, and my luthier endorses them. These also have a center-tapped hole in the middle of the shaft. Put the tip of your string in the hole and start tightening that string. The design increases the chances of the string staying in the hole. VERY handy if you don't like getting scratched by your own instrument or repeating the same action over and over.
