First published in 1949, Guerilla Days in Ireland is an extraordinary story of the Irish War of Independence and the fight between two unequal forces, which ended in the withdrawal of the British from twenty-six counties. Tom Barry describes the setting up of the West Cork flying column, its training, and the plan of campaign. In particular he gives his account of the Kilmichael ambush, one of the most controversial episodes of the War of Independence.

It's like a military report, all first person, sometimes a little defensive but acknowledge his own mistakes. I thought it was very readable. I appreciated how much he valued the lives of those men he was leading and grieved over lives lost, how much he valued the women's contribution, and that he said not all English were evil, just some of the ones he was fighting. He even said when the British soldiers were just doing their duty he treated them as enemy combatants according to the rules of war. If they acted like pathological criminals, he treated them accordingly. I was on a tour that included battle sites in West Cork and this book was a great preparation for that. It was interesting that he met, liked and respected both Michael Collins and De Valera.
This is an amazing book! Americans could learn so much from Tom Barry's experiences, the courage and fortitude of the defenders of Ireland, and the wisdom that comes from successfully dealing with terrorism first hand. "Sentiment has no place in stopping terror tactics, and only a ruthless counteraction can ever effectively halt it."
An insider's explanation of how the Irish people finally succeeded in a successful campaign against the British military which had occupied their homeland for generations. All I could have wished for was more detail about how so many guerillas were equipped, fed and housed when in the field.
