Okay I admit it, HAIRSPRAY is not one of my favorite shows....I enjoy the more "mature" shows, I guess you could call them....but the reason I bought the DVD was, of course John Travolta, as Edna. The rest of the cast was good, dealing with the material they had to act with, and Chris Walkin singing and dancing, well that part didn't really cut it for me.....however, the song and dance between him and John....well that was rather priceless. (okay, okay, I got a chuckle out of that scene) If you enjoy teenage movies, (like HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC) then HAIRSPRAY is for you. If you like John Travolta, buy the DVD. If you like Broadway musicals....well, this is a good show for high school kids.
This is one great video. While I do not particularly enjoy musicals, this one is different. The music actually is part of the plot. Dancing is part of the story. And the music is so catchy. You will find yourself breaking out into song. The performances are outstanding. John Travolta is so convincing as a woman, you have to remind yourself he is a man and start laughing all over again. Christopher Walken plays John's husband and he is light on his feet as you see the love spark between them. Amanda Bynes is perfect as the best friend to Nikki Blonsky who steals the show with her energy, charisma and positivity. Don't watch this film if you feel like crying; it is totally uplifting. It elevates the underdogs in life. There are very few movies I can watch more than once: Hairspray and Shawshank Redemption.
As far amazon quality goes: halfway through the movie, we lost HD and had to suffer through some of the worst film quality ever experienced.
This was one of my favorite movie experiences the year it came out just because of how much fun it is. The setting is wonderfully vintage yet relatable, the characters are overblown but still feel real and the music is just astounding.
Nikki Blonsky is the real heart and soul of this movie, but all performers do great work (yes, even Amanda Bynes.) The film also has fun little moments of biting satire that ring true to the John Waters original. The body and racial acceptance messages are the center of the film make this movie not only fun but also uplifting.
It's not flawless, the way some of the numbers are shot feels generic and doesn't always properly highlight the dancing. Also the finale gets a little muddled from character and story resolution overload. However the energy and performances easily keep the whole thing on track and it's a wonderful film for the whole family.
