Additional Information

of jam; cans of soup; bottles of medicine; boxes of cereal; buttons on appliances ... the list is endless. Without a Braille label; blind people have to ask sighted friends to read print labels on such items. CD and DVD cases; files; credit cards ... all these have print labels that can't be read by blind folks. But now you can make Braille labels of your own with our Braille label gun; giving blind people unparalleled independence and freedom. What's more; there is no other device available for under a thousand dollars which someone with no knowledge of Braille can use to print Braille. This means that a sighted person who knows nothing of Braille can still use this labeler to write quick Braille notes; sign greeting cards; add Braille to To and From tags; even spruce up class projects on the Braille system or Helen Keller ... The list goes on and on. Our Braille labeler measures less than ten inches long; four inches wide; and stands about two inches tall. To use it; simply hold the unit in one hand; while spinning the dial with the other to select the correct letter. Squeeze the handle; and that letter is instantly embossed in Braille on the tape. And when finished; just cut; peal and stick on your new Braille label. It's that easy. This Braille label maker can emboss Braille on 3/8" or 1/2" vinyl labeling tape (one roll of half-inch tape is included in the package free of charge). The upper rim of the dial is embossed in Braille so blind people can make up their own labels; while the lower rim is marked with regular print so sighted friends can help. The dial features the complete alphabet; the number sign; most commonly used Grade 2 Braille contractions; and many punctuation marks. And last but not least; the built-in tape-cutter not only cuts the label off perfectly straight; but you'll also get an easy-peel tab to boot. Our Braille labeler is portable; convenient; and practical - a must at home; work or school. Making up Braille labels has never been easier!

Overall, seems fairly well made. Plastic casing is sturdy. Punch handle is long, easy to grip, and able to take plenty of pressure. The letter dial is firmly attached and snaps into place for each letter.

Has a built-in cutting blade to cut the label tape but it is not able cut the 1/2" wide tape that comes with the labeler. I replaced the tape with 3/8" wide tape and was able to smoothly cut with normal pressure. I suggest buying 3/8" tape rolls.

The tape automatically advances after each letter is punched (or with a half squeeze). The tape advance worked fine for both 1/2" and 3/8" tape.

The braille dots on the tape seemed to be pretty well raised with a firm but reasonable squeeze of the punch handle. Less pressure means lower dots.

Loading the tape is easy, just flip open the handle cover, drop in the tape roll, and slide the tape forward into the slot.
I bought this from Future Aids to help a friend after reading positive reviews of the company and this labeler. It began jamming up from the start. The cutter didn't work properly and would cut the tab completely off and drop the tab under the dial. In less than 2 days, it stopped working completely. After 2 hours of digging out the tiny plastic bits that were jamming it up, the letters began to rub off the lower dial creating a problem for me because I don't read braille. But, I shouldn't HAVE to read braille if this unit had worked as it claimed. It never worked correctly from the start and Future Aids refused to accept any responsibility for the problem. They said it had a 30 day warranty FROM PURCHASE, but since it took 3 days shy of a month to even receive it, that warranty was worthless. Furthermore, it should last way longer than a month anyway. The company blamed me for all the problems and refused any actions to solve the problem. I am completely unhappy with this... Read more
This labeler works fairly alright for my needs. However, while they include some contractions, they strangely include a few very rarely used ones that I've never onced used and yet left off common ones that everyone uses frequently. You would think the more common contractions would be given priority.

In addition, if you use the built in cutting feature, the device will get jammed. I've tried this on several of these labelers with the same result. It's much better instead just to trim it down with a pair of scissors.

Keeping those two things in mind, it does work for labeling a variety of different items. Just have to keep those two flaws in mind and decide if it's a dealbreaker for you or not.
