Papakha is a high hat made from real sheep fur and traditional for the Caucasian mountaineers. Originally papakha served as a representation of the status of the man, it was an object of greatest pride.

Later on papakha showed the financial status of its owner and were made from the highest quality sheep fur, that is why the hats were passed on from generation to generation.

Papakha hat acquired a new meaning as it was extensively used in Russian Cossack Army. Now it is a symbol of Cossack's outfit, but Caucasians still wear papakhas as a part of their traditional attire.
