This season is sadly disappointing. For some reason by the third act of the first episode the actors just forgot how to act. And it gets almost silly as the show goes on. I'm on Episode 7 or 6 right now, it just seems like they're just going with the motion, just waiting for the season to end; sad because season 1 was such a phenomenal introduction to series. I started watching at season 4, and I was so overwhelmed by the quality of the show (after four seasons show tend to fall off) I wanted to start watching from the beginning, but I read from other reviews that season 2 is to be skipped & that 1, 3 thru 5 are all the best.
This season mostly focused on very boring and uninteresting Polock union workers. Yeah we get it whytes are the "hard working" class. Blah bah blah. Who cares? I only wanted to see what happened with the Barksdale clan and their effect on the city. But it seems they are only the side story, the real story is a pissing contest between these two polocks...
If there's one thing I've learned from watching The Wire, patience pays. The Wire is a truly addictive show. My wife and I would get up an hour early to have our coffee in the morning and watch an episode before having to get things together for the day's events. Season 2 of The Wire centers on Baltimore's Harbor. Maj. Stanislaus Valchek (Al Brown) gets into a head butting contest with Stevedore Frank Sobotka (Chris Bauer) over what stained glass window will replace a broken one in their church. Because of this, Valchek tasks the Major Crimes Unit to get Sobotka based on money that shouldn't be available to him.
Season 2 only gets better with each episode. The first time I watched this series I wasn't very happy that it didn't center on the Barksdale crew. I was soon enthralled with what was going on. McNulty (Dominic West), relegated to the "boats" (Harbor Police), finds a body floating in the river. Using his talents to irritate any and everybody, he...
Season 2 is typically called the worst season of this series. I think most people are miffed that this season sort of gets away from the street level drug trade and focuses on the docks, and even actor interviews display some pretty heavy cynicism regarding production, basically saying - and I'm definitely paraphrasing here - that they felt the show was just another thing being hijacked by 'whitey'. Alright, I get it, but saying The Wire had one bad season is like saying Bach had one shitty cantata. The only real letdown in this season is that one awful bar scene in the second or third episode where the music is playing and all the dock workers are going wild. As for the season's content? A great documentation of urban blight. You really see the white working class at the very bottom - the people who can barely keep their heads above water. Nothing may compare to the economic poverty we see in other seasons, but that poverty exists because of the poverty shown in this season...
