Billings in his Hardtack and Coffee is able to capture not only the battles of the Civil War we all know, but the life of the soldier we have all wondered about. His prose is touched with the style of the age which makes it not only an interesting read, but also offers an authenticity to the book. I am not a Civil War buff, but I certainly enjoyed the information and style Mr. Billings offers in his Hardtack and Coffee. I believe you will too.
If you want to understand the American Civil war, this book is an excellent choice.
My only regret is that I was unable to access the footnotes from my Kindle.
I suspect that this is a grievous loss.
Real down and dirty how it was from a vet of the times. Funny how they never really change for the infantry, artillery, engineer, and drivers. If you have been in the dirt or trenches you will really understand and relate to what these guys went through. Though more than 150 years have passed, the author brings home exactly how things are the same no matter the time.
