For the better part of 2012 and 2013, I was partially responsible for the care of a sick relative. I would drive 4+ hours one way to get to her house so that I could relieve her primary caretakers (her mother) so that they could have a break for a weekend or two every month. It was a harrowing two years. I watched a brilliant lawyer and athletic marathon runner waste away from brain cancer. My weekends were spent caring for this person and her two children (who were 4 and 2 by the end). Her husband - God love him, he's a good man - was about as talkative as a stone and almost as cold. I can't blame him considering everything he was going through, but it made for very sad, very cold and lonely weekends.
It was right around the beginning of my many, many road trips that a friend suggested the "Harmontown" podcast and I started listening to it on the long rides to care for her.
It turned into my special preparation and therapeutic come-down for these...
An intimate look into the mind of a self-absorbed genius who, despite his every intent to self-destruct and burn bridges, realizes that the key to his own happiness is the happiness of others. Harmon and crew are a comedic goldmine, and the exploits of their cross-country booze-filled journey of self discovery is incredibly well documented here. I was already excited to watch this, having been in the crowd at their Arlington show, but what really floored me was the production value of this movie. It's honest, real, well shot and well edited. I would have liked to seen a little more time spent with the other cast members, like Jeff or Erin, but they do a great job with Spencer's story and the way he tries to handle his newfound fame.
Overall, if you like anything Dan Harmon has ever made or been a part of, and especially if you've listened to the podcast, come on down to Harmontown.
If you feel like you are misunderstood, or are sad because you think no one is like you; if you're nerdy or don't fit in or feel ridiculed because of who you are or what you look like, then HARMONTOWN is for you. Dan Harmon is like the king of the Island of Misfit Toys. This documentary traces his career as the creator of the TV show 'Community' but is mostly a road-trip adventure across America. Harmon is a whirling alcoholic dervish of creative madness who magnetizes and brings together twentysomething audiences of differently oriented people. His girlfriend (now wife) and comedian Erin McGathy, his co-host Jeff Davis, and his assistant and Harmontown Dungeon Master Spencer Crittenden round out the list of main characters in the movie. But there are so many cameos and comments from famous comedians and not-so-famous fans that you get to see how this man has touched so many lives and made them feel part of a true community in real life.
