Say Anything puts out records, and I keep buying them. Why? My only guess is I have a bad case of stockholm syndrome. I have the same issue with a few other bands, notably Reel Big Fish (don't worry I will not compare Say Anything to Reel Big Fish). Is Say Anything (Max Bemis) talented? Unquestionably. Does he put out good music?....sometimes I can't tell. Here lies the problem. These bands (in this case Say Anything) put out the perfect album for me at the perfect time (...Is a Real Boy). I'm hooked. The rest of their music leaves me feeling incomplete, but I can't get that glimmer of amazement out of my head. The problem with Say Anything is that the songs are sometimes so personal that it is almost impossible to relate to them, or even have fun listening to them. They are undoubdtedly good and well written, but leave me wanting more. It has never been so apparent as on Hebrews. These songs are very personal, and somewhat berating to the fans, which I don't...
Say Anything is a band that's essentially made up of one person when in the studio; Max Bemis. He plays most of the instruments, he writes almost all the lyrics, and he's very much in charge of the direction of the band.
Of course all music is a collaborative process, and there are many people and factors involved in the composition of it. But Say Anything always was and always will be defined by its front-man. From the crazy and strange Is A Real Boy to the aggressive and sprawling In Defense of the Genre, to his softer and far poppier albums released after his marriage to Sherri DuPree (Self-Titled and Anarchy My Dear) the music of Say Anything has followed Max's progression through life and his journey as a person.
I admit that I used to consider myself one of the biggest fans of this band. I became a little bit less enthusiastic with the releases of Self-Titled and Anarchy My Dear, (the latter in particular) but I gave all of them 5-stars; I may not always...
Wow what short unhelpful reviews this album has gotten so far on amazon. Allow me to try and help. If you've been a Say Anything fan the last few years you should kind of know what to expect. Personally I find Max normally has a handful of really catchy songs on each cd intermingled with some odd stuff and this is no different, Hebrews has some great songs on it but still a few odd clunkers. Overall I would say it's much better than Anarcy was, that album felt like it only had a couple good songs on it and nothing with much feeling. I would say if you liked their self titled album and Defense before it, that this is in line with those releases.
