I have listened to the music of Alasdair Fraser for more years than I care to remember and have always loved his spirited gift as a musician. The addition of Natalie Haas' cello artistry to Alasdair's fiddling is a perfect balance and brings and entirely new element to the music. This new album is absolutely fabulous -- some classic, some new, and some interesting partnerships with guests artists. I love listening and can hardly wait for more of their work to be produced for our enjoyment.
As the official ambassador of Scottish music to the USA Alasdair rarely fails to delight, and with this album he's back to top form.

Alisdair's roots are in the "high" East Coast style of Scots fiddling, spiced with a dash of Irish ornamentation, and no-one does it better. In many ways it's a retro style, deeply respectful of its roots in Gow, Marshall and Skinner.

But in his recent albums he has teamed up with his protege, cellist Natalie Haas, whose driving syncopations and imaginative harmonies add a contemporary flavour. It's an enchanting blend, and on this album Natalie is sensational. There is a long history of the "big fiddle" in Scots music but it was never like this - there are some truly magical moments here. She's arrived as a major artist in her own right.

The tunes are a good blend of the new and the familiar. Less upbeat than their classic "Fire and Grace" album, the selection leans towards the slow and contemplative, with intricate... Read more
Of the three albums of Alasdair Fraser, master and teacher of the Scottish fiddle, and his cello musical partner, Natalie Haas, and also including the several solo and group albums of Fraser, this album is the bright star. It is magical. Every track is beautifully arranged, perfectly performed. Cello and fiddle weave and exchange melody in harmonic balance. The sound is sweet and sumptuous. The duo has guest musicians on three tracks who play fiddle, guitar, piano, viola, and cello for an even more rich sound. The sprightly reels and other dances lift the heart and the darker laments are moving. Tunes are traditional and recent compositions. They include Celtic forms from Cape Breton and Galicia. The duo close with a classical-styled schottische. This is a beautiful, pleasurable album that will be appreciated not only by fans of Scottish and Irish music but also of classical chamber music.
