Two weldors in my family encouraged me to get a Miller Auto Set welder because they are so easy to use. Just set the thickness of the metal and the welder does the rest. But, the Miller they suggested is much more welder than I need. The Handler 125 EZ is somewhat similar to that Miller because the user sets one knob for the thickness of the metal and the machine does the rest. This Hobart costs much less than the Miller Auto Set welders. (Miller and Hobart are now the same company.) Most of my welding is on materials approximately 1/8 inch in thickness, so the Handler's 125 amp maximum output at 115 volts and 20 amps AC input is adequate for most of my needs. Reviewers elsewhere on the Internet say the Handler really does weld steel 3/16 inch thick in a single pass, and thicker still with multiple passes. I did weld some 5/8" x 5/8" bar stock end-to-end by grinding a chamfer on each end and making a root weld. Then I built up the "V" openings with repeated alternating...
I bought this as my first welder because it had positive reviews online...I wanted one to fix the floors on a vintage car. Purists scoff at flux welding but this thing produces great welds to my untrained eyes. Made in the US it came well packed with a detailed manual, spare tips and extra grounding clamp. The metal case is solid with a nice look.
I put two pieces of thick metal on my workbench and pressed the trigger. My first welds were sloppy, but after about 10 minutes I figured it out: Read the manual or watch videos online on how to hold the gun...the angle you hold the tip is the secret as does precise panning across the joint. I also bought one of the autodarkening helmets which was worth every penny, I can't imagine how people used the old helmets for decades. You should also get yourself some of the heavy leather gloves. Very satisfying.
I've wanted to weld for years, so I bought this little unit and took a 2 hour class on MIG welding. Even though this unit does not use gas, I was making decent-looking welds on steel plate within about 10 minutes. Very easy to set up, and the single knob control with flux core wire takes all the guesswork out of welding for us inexperienced folks. So much fun I'm looking for projects around the ranch to use it on
