I have been playing harmonica since age 4, when a Marine Band cost 75cents. I have enjoyed several of the newer versions of the old harp since then, including Blues Harp, Golden Melody and Special 20 among others, but never a Crossharp. It feels fine in my hands, the bamboo finish is smooth and does not seem to warp. The sound is strong and the reeds easy to bend. I like it and after 62 years of harmonica playing, can recommend it.
As a gigging harp player, the majority of my "first line" harmonicas are customized by harmonica artists. Custom harps have silky playability, impressive volume, and powerful tone. That said, if you've been playing Marine Bands, Special 20s, and the lot, and you want a taste of what a custom sounds and plays like, the Crossover is an excellent entry point without the cost (or wait) for a boutique harp. Like a custom harmonica, it is louder, bolder, and easier to play than a regular diatonic. I am in the process of updating all of my "backup" harps to Crossovers. Even the best harmonicas have reeds go bad from time to time. With the Crossover, I know that if I blow a custom reed during a gig, my backup harp will be almost as good.
In reading other reviews for the Hohner Crossover harmonica, over and over the phrase "best out-of-box harmonica" was used. I totally agree. This harp is far superior than a regular Marine Band (which I have previously preferred over Lee Oskars or Suzukis) or any other that I have purchased. This harp is smooth, intuitively responsive, and still rings like a bell. It delivers true sound when blowing soft but can handle a louder, raucous punch. Notes bend extremely easily. For any harp player, regardless of the brand they normally blow, I recommend they purchase one of these. They may find the dilemma I am now in: replacing all my old harps with the Hohner Crossover.
