"In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit..." but Hobbits aren't the only ones with down-to-earth dreams.
This folio of "feasible fantasy" floor plans gives you a fun-loving peek inside a dozen earth-bermed dwellings in an imaginary borough of burrows--all drawn to scale as if the builder, himself, were offering an open house tour.

What a fun book! And clever too! I'm having a high school flash back to the hours I spent in study hall drawing fantasy floor plans. But the cool thing about this sweet little book, is that it is full of fantasy, yet contains realistic ideas for your own home, much the way reading The Hobbit or taking in the Lord of the Rings trilogy makes us feel like this world, too, could be real.
Ms. Dean pulls readers into her quaint drawings with brief introductory descriptions of their layouts and best use, always with origins in mind. Take this one of the Beekeeper's Burrow: "The beekeeper intended to use the loft as a larder and for the occasional overnight guest, but after his first visitor helped himself to ham, cheese, and half cask of his best ale, it's said he made an end of the practice."

This short little book gives some nice floorplans for supposed hobbit homes, but never addresses any technical issues at all, and is more about how pleasant a hobbit home should be than how these homes could be built. Nothing about drainage, structural support, site suitability, or even long term livability or climate approprateness. If you are looking for something about hobbits for your collection get this. If you are looking for something to inspire building your own hobbit home, turn to some real architecture or home building books.
I ordered this book knowing that this was inspired by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Many Hobbit inspired house designs are presented here. Pay attention to the description of the book. It's only 34 pages thick, pretty thin to be honest. Be advised this is in no way a book showing how to build or design Hobbit houses.
Each floor plan illustrated in the book has a specific name, I'm assuming in regards to the author's mythos they have created for this Hobbit community that each house seems to represent in the community. Inside are some interesting house plans and layouts, some of the art showing the exterior aspects of the house and a few illustrations of certain rooms were well drawn.
There are approximation of square footage of each design presented in the book. There are no actual measurements to each house plan. On some of the smaller designs You can kind of figure basic dimensions as they are small simple layouts. On the larger house designs the floor plans...
