This all color pictorial history book, Horses to Horsepower by the authors of two previous books, Land, Sea, and Air and Companies in Quarters, concentrates on the Los Angeles City Fire Department apparatus which served from the days of horse-drawn steamers to the most current fire apparatus of today s modern fire department.

In the past 125 years, the LAFD has seen many changes in the methods of fighting fires.  The Department has continued to purchase the most modern and up-to-date fire apparatus in the country.

The authors take us through the years of horse-drawn apparatus built by manufacturers such as Amoskeag, Hayes, and Gorter, to the first gasoline powered apparatus built by Seagrave, Stuz, and American LaFrance up to the modern apparatus including Oshkosh, Pierce, and KME.

This fine 208 page book features every type of LAFD apparatus including pumpers, aerial ladders, helicopters, fire-boats, and ambulances.  Many pages are devoted to apparatus in action at brush fires, structure fires, and fires at the Port of Los Angeles.

This latest pictorial book is a handsome addition to the libraries of those interested in the history of fire fighting and fire apparatus in the U.S., particularly in Los Angeles, which has a rich history of fire fighting from horses to horsepower.
