This short booklet, only 32 pages, is obviously neither a textbook of Spanish nor a series of specific exercises. But it is a group of valuable hints by an American who majored in Spanish, even spent a year in Puerto Rico, before realizing that he would need to do something more in order to become truly fluent. What he offers here is the self-discipline that brought him to the point where he is often mistaken for a native Spanish speaker (only not from around here). Many of these are common-sense, but I can see that they would be undeniably useful, especially for people who have studied a lot but reached a personal plateau.
I have noted from my own study and also from working with ESL students in America that language skills comprise four different activities -- reading, writing, speaking, and listening -- and that different individuals progress at different speeds in the different disciplines. I myself am a comfortable reader in Spanish and pretty good writer, but shy as a...
This book is extremely short, just a few pages to describe the author's method for learning Spanish. It consists of basically a combination of flashcards of 10 words and phrases per day, cumulative until the end of the week. This seems odd to me because that means you would have practiced the ten words you learned on the first day 7 times while the words you go over on the last day you would have practiced only once. Then you practice ALL the words you have learned monthly, quarterly, and yearly. Then you combine that with recording yourself reading Spanish on a regular (I think daily?) basis and memorizing passages of text on a monthly basis. This method sounds not only extremely tedious and a great way to kill your passion for language learning, but nearly impossible for anyone who's not a full time student (...of Spanish). He says that in order to make this method work for him, he devoted two 45-minute session in the morning and two 45-minute sessions in the afternoon, followed by...
I am living and working in Spain. It has been a struggle to keep the intensity up with studying Spanish - when I work with all English speakers and have English speaking Spanish friends. This book has provided some encouragement and tips to get me started again with a systematic course of study.
