Additional Information

Dr. Tovah Klein, called “the toddler whisperer” on Good Morning America, has penned “a parenting milestone” (Dr. Harvey Rotbart, No Regrets Parenting) with How Toddlers Thrive, which shows parents of children ages two to five how to harness the singular power of the toddler mind during what might be the most crucial time of a child’s brain development, to plant the seeds of lifelong success.

Why do some children thrive, and others struggle? The answers may surprise you. New research indicates that the seeds for adult success are actually planted in the toddler years.

Dr. Tovah Klein’s research and firsthand work with thousands of toddlers explains why the toddler brain is best suited to laying the foundation for success. Dr. Klein reveals the new science behind drivers such as resilience, self-reliance, self-regulation, and empathy that are more critical to success than simple intelligence. She explains what you can do today to instill these key qualities in your toddler during this crucial time, so they are on track and ready to learn when they enter school at age five.

How Toddlers Thrive explains why the toddler years are different than any other period during childhood. She shows what is happening in children’s brains and bodies at this age that makes their behavior so turbulent, and why your reaction to their behavior—the way you speak to, speak about, and act toward your toddler—holds the key to a successful tomorrow and a happier today. This provocative book will inspire you to be a better parent, and give you the tools to help you nurture your child’s full potential. A smart and useful guide, this book cracks the preschooler code, revealing what you can do to help your toddler grow into a fulfilled child and adult—while helping you and your toddler live more happily together now, and every day.

I borrowed this book from the library after hearing the author on NPR, then bought two copies after that (one for me, one as a replacement when I gave that copy away) . I really like that her work is based on research and not simply opinion. It gave me a good idea of what "normal" toddler behavior was, and why it is that way. Also, at the end of the book there is a list that is like a "cliff notes" version of the book, summing up all her major points, which is helpful for a quick reference. Highly recommend it.
This book is a must read for parents of toddlers. I especially like the premise that it's our job as parents to help our toddlers thrive and not to shame them or control/change their "childish" behavior. Klein explains the toddler mind and has made it a lot easier for me to communicate with and empathize with my child. It also has helped me to choose my battles wisely and even prevent meltdowns and tantrums. I'm happy to say we have a lot less tantrums since I read this book. I also love the chapter on shaming as it sheds light on the ways we parents can inadvertently cause our children to feel ashamed. Shame is an emotion that adults have a hard time understanding and dealing with. Imagine the damage it does to a little toddler. This book helps parents to teach their children emotional health and to have an emotionally healthy relationship with their child. An emotionally healthy child grows into an emotionally healthy adult. We need more of that in the world! Thank you,... Read more
Amazing. I read this book about 6 mo ago when my son was 2.5 yr old. This book really helped me learn to communicate better him. I thought I was on the right track, but there were definitely some missing pieces. I now always think of the "Toddler's POV(point of view)" during our interactions. It has saved me from dealing with daily tantrums/screaming. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It's fascinating to read about the research and understand the "why" behind how to interact with your child. I think we all want the best for our children and I think this book helps us as parents lay the groundwork for a a very successful, independent and self confident child. Read it!!!!!!!
