I've used this form of meditation, passage meditation, for many years now and can attest to its healthy benefits such as slowing down in the hurried, harried world we live in today, becoming calmer in the midst of crises, concentrating better on tasks at work, and especially, focusing outward more on the needs of family members and the people around me. On many levels this form of meditation, and the allied disciplines it contains, has been a life-saving discovery for me. I am ever grateful, indeed, to its author, Eknath Easwaran, for having intended it for those of us conditioned in the Western, linear mind-set hoping for more than just material comfort but also for such intangibles as inner peace and harmony with others.
I have been limping toward meditation for almost 25 years. I have read books, taken courses, and listened to hours of CDs and Tapes. This the first book that explains the process in terms that I could comprehend and relate to. Easwaran guides the reader in two ways, method and purpose. I have heard that there are significant differences in the ways in which men and women undertake meditation. Since most books on meditation have been written by men, I have suspected that I was simply on a different wavelength. Not so with this book which is both sophisticated in terms of content and simple in terms of access.
The book is just the first 26 pages of the author's book on Passage Meditation. It would have made a lot of sense to sell it as a separate book had the author or someone taken the efforts to summarize Passage Meditation for those who are low on patience and want to grasp a lot of information in relatively lesser time. Surprised to see that none of the reviewers mentioned this or I'd have rather bought the whole book. No complaints about the content but I find it ethically wrong that someone chose to sell a few pages of a book as if it were a book by itself, and hence the 1 star.
I like the author's lively and easy going style though.
