The Hoya 67mm alpha Circular Polarizer Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions. Works very good. It complements by 55-300mm. The darkness is just optimum. Sometimes it is difficult to smoothly mount the filter on the lens. The threads get lost. Rotating the filter is just OK, neither loose nor right. See the attached photo. The sky was whitish due to the sun right where the seagull was flying. The filter did a good job to make it look like neutral sky blue rather than completely making it bluish. Also I did not loose lot of light and got good exposure on the bird.
This was my first filter purchase for a Canon SL1 paired with the latest version 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. I shoot a lot around water and bright blue skies so I figured a polarized lens would be a good investment. The Hoya 49mm alpha CP Filter comes in a solid package that was just a bit scary to open, but once I pried it open and had the lens in my hands, it felt solid enough on its own. I had to be very careful not to cross thread the filter onto my lens, but I'm sure that's a given. By hand, it was a little tricky since the threads are super small, and the band that actually tightens the filter versus change the polarization angle was also very narrow. This caused me to unscrew the filter my first time playing with the polarization, luckily it unscrewed into my palm rather than onto the ground. After that, I took a little more time to snug it on the lens firmly, and have yet to feel it loosen up at all aside from a test to make sure I hadn't overtightened it.
You can spend a lot on photo gear, the line between top quality and junk is blurred. Having passed on a couple expensive CPs I decided to try this Hoya after seeing positive reviews, and I'm happy with my decision. It does what its supposed to do, easily threads onto my Nikon lens and is smooth rotating. Very solidly built, (unlike a Tiffen I once bought and returned). This will spend most of its life on my 16-85 f/3.5 and has already improved my early and late day photos with color saturation and cutting glare. NICE filter, Hoya!
