Two discs. 44 min. each approximately. Remastered sound. First off this is not the complete session as claimed. Three tracks are not included, which are on the single disc release with the same title. They are: You Got To Move (done by The Rolling Stones),The Train I Ride, and You Ain't Gonna Worry My Life Anymore. If these tracks were throw-aways it might not matter, however, these tracks are as good as anything on the album. Aside from this,it's nice to have more McDowell to listen to.
Well-known as a country acoustic bottleneck guitarist, here McDowell plays an electric guitar with the inclusion of a bass and drums rhythm section. At the time, during the blues "rediscovery" period,it was thought that a rock rhythm section would be more in keeping with the era's listening habits. It was also decided that McDowell would play an electric instrument. Happily the rhythm section is mixed a bit below McDowell and isn't intrusive, and McDowell takes to the electric guitar...
I just picked up an immaculate 1st pressing vinyl lp for under $15- at my fave used store. (my record girl is the best!) "I Do Not Play No Rock n' Roll" was an lp I had in the early 70s at a tender age no less when you could find lot's of great blues in the cut out bins. I am not sure what happned to it (like a lot of other lp's from the time) but I am sure glad I caught up with this again. Fred McDowell was a great & influetntial "later day" delta blues man. You can hear how he would have influenced guys like RL Burnside, Jr. Kimbrough etc. He was truly a "zen master" of bottle neck guitar & would frequently finish off his vocal phrases with a slide lick. He complements his vocals like few others in this style. On this LP he has bass & drum backing which is never intrusive & Fred does play electric which is why I say it reminds me of the great "hypnotic" sounds made by Burnsides & Kimbrough. My wife thinks the "kids in the hall" created their character "Mississippi Gary" from hearing...
If you like Hill Country Blues, then this is your new favorite record. This is a set of the complete sessions of I Do Not Play No Rock 'N' Roll and it flows wonderfully as a whole. I'm not a fan of tacking bonus tracks on to the ends of albums when I like to hear a record as the artist intended, but this one is more (rather than too much) of a good thing and it all sounds like a piece. Some will prefer McDowell without accompaniment, but the bass and drums enhance his sound here rather than distract- it's still very spare and intimate sounding. It is, in fact, not rock 'n' roll. The mastering is by Bob Norberg, whose work doesn't always inspire confidence with the audiophile crowd, but here the sound is immediate and warm- exactly what this music needs. As to the playing: it's haunting, droning, spiritual, passionate, cathartic, and good for your soul. The cover art is terrible, but don't let that stop you.
