Back in the early and mid-sixties, when I was first playing in rock bands, I owned a Gibson ES125TDC. It was what could be called a "student grade" guitar - one without the glosses and fancy fittings of the 'pro grade' Gibsons - no neck binding, for instance, and basic P90 pickups instead of humbuckers. Sort of like a Les Paul Jr. in place of a real Les Paul. Once a measure of success came my way I "traded up" to a fancier model. One with humbuckers, neck binding, and a semi-solid design that, by making the top less resonant, made uncontrolable feedback - then the bain of working RnR musicians - much less likely.
When, this past year, my early work with The Abstracts, including the band's fabled 'lost' Columbia sessions, were released on an LP, i again got to hear the unique sound of a hollow bodied electric guitar with P90s. Wow, though I, why'd I ever sell that thing? Absolutely no guitar I have played in the many intervening years has that sound. And so the search...
I bought this guitar after letting go of an Epi Casino "inspired by" guitar. I say without reservation- the feel, sound and workmanship on the Ibanez surpasses the Epiphone. Gibson boasts the Epiphone came with the American made P90's . They were too dark sounding for my taste. I imagine the ASR 70 has more of the Vibe of a late 50's es 330 ( if gibson made them then) or a true 60's epi casino. I used the 70 on a few gigs- bottom three strings were flatwound. It nails blues, rock, Beatles, country- jazz- you name it. 'Becoming a favorite of mine and i have a lot of "high end" and some vintage guitars. Good things can come in very unassuming and inexpensive packages.
Wanted to replace a harmony H79(converted to a 6 string) which was stolen. This ASR70 more than replaced It. I've not plugged it in yet It sounds so cool raw. Condition so far 5 stars. Double boxed. Fast delivery. My harm79 was a bit lighter but it was dried from age. It came with d adarios however I do not know which d's they are, so when I have to replace them.
