This has been a favorite of mine since I first saw it shortly after it originally came out. Eastwood does a terrific job as the aging but devoted Secret Service agent who is dragged into an assassination plot by John Malkovich's seemingly insane yet methodical (diabolical?) character. A clever storyline keeps the movie on-track, though a not-quite-believable love affair between Eastwood and the much younger Rene Russo -- while fun to watch -- didn't add much to the film. A good movie to watch for some insight into the mind of a sociopath, as well as a hint of what the Secret Service go through to protect the POTUS.
In the line of fire is my favorite Clint Eastwood movie. It`s an extremely intelligent thriller that doesn`t get made very much sadly. The performances and character developement is outstanding especially John Malkovich`s very complex villain. You can`t ever tell if he`s just completely psychotic or just pushed to the edge due to a shady government. I love that kind of ambiguity in films for the viewer to make their own assessments. Clint Eastwood is stellar as always but this is the movie that should have swept the Oscars rather than his extremely overrated Unforgiven. There`s one scene in particular where he`s talking about the day that he was guarding Kennedy on the day of his assassination and he does such an amazing job that you really believe he was there. Director Wolfgang Petersen has created his best film here. It`s brilliant and thoroughly entertaining and exciting. A must own!
I have watched this twice and will probably watch again. Superb acting by John Malkovich - it is easy to see why he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in this movie. He is great when he is being quietly creepy and equally effective when he looses his temper with Frank Horrigan (Eastwood's character). He is totally believable in his part. The back-story (that Frank was on the Presidential Protection Detail in Dallas in 1963 but may not have done all that he could to save Kennedy) was effectively worked in to the movie. I also enjoyed the contributions by Dylan McDermott a Frank's partner, Fred Thompson as the White House Chief of Staff, and John Mahoney as Frank's boss in the Secret Service. The only negative is that the romance between Eastwood and Rene Russo seemed a bit contrived given the difference in their ages.
