Additional Information

To say that Nirvana's third and ultimately final studio album In Utero was 1993's most polarizing record would be the understatement of a decade. The unadorned sonic rawness of Steve Albini's recording laid bare every primal nuance of the most confrontational yet vulnerable material Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl would ever record. And with its 1991 predecessor Nevermind having sold some 30 million copies, singlehandedly returning honest rock 'n' roll to the top of the pop charts, In Utero was essentially the first record Nirvana would make with any expectations from the public. So from the opening quasi-shamble melodics of 'Serve The Servants' through the bittersweet closing strains of 'All Apologies,' In Utero was the sound of the most incredible yet conflicted rock 'n' roll band of the era at the peak of its powers coming to terms with a generational spokes-band mantle they'd never seen coming-and ultimately surmounting these struggles to make the record they needed to make. As Rolling Stone's David Fricke said in his review at the time, 'In Utero is a lot of things-brilliant, corrosive, enraged and thoughtful, most of them all at once. But more than anything, it's a triumph of the will.'

This 20th Anniversary 3CD/1DVD Super Deluxe Edition of the unwitting swansong of the single most influential band of the 1990s features more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare and unreleased recordings, including B-sides, compilation tracks, never-before-heard demos and live material featuring the final touring lineup of Cobain, Novoselic, Grohl, and Pat Smear. This box set also includes a DVD of the complete 'Live and Loud' show from Seattle's Pier 48 on December 13, 1993 plus never-before-released bonus material.

In Utero is by far my favorite Nirvana album. I think Steve Albini did a wonderful job of capturing what the band actually sounded like at their peak. Something Andy Wallace's mix of Nevermind failed to do. In this version of the record I get to hear a full scope picture of what led to the album that i enjoyed so much the first time I heard it in 1993.

The remasters disc is my least favorite part of this. I like the original master because it had dynamics. Something that's lost in this remaster. However, it doesn't ruin the record. It's also nice to have the B-sides right there. Hearing Scott Litt's polished re-mix of Pennyroyal Tea is interesting, but I prefer the original mix still. I'm happy to finally hear Albini's mixes of Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies. Though they sound exactly as I imagined.

The remix disc is very intriguing. Albini did the remix himself. So it's not some other producer trying to "improve" upon the original. In this disc he... Read more
This only really concerns the high-res Blu Ray audio edition of this album.

I directly A/B'ed the Blu Ray and CD, both playing at the same time with the same song, switching back and forth, and my conclusion is that the difference between formats on this remaster is incredibly subtle. I've been a fan of high rez digital formats for a few years now- SACD, DVD-A, downloads from HD tracks, and now this format. I don't mean this as a diss on the record or the remastering job, just that the CD sounds really almost as good and I had to listen hard (with headphones) to really make out the difference in detail- you can just barely hear it in the drums, more body and depth in the snare. What you're hearing with this is the difference between a file at this resolution versus the dithered CD. Unfortunately the mix and master of this record is a bit too slamming to really show off the revealing details of the higher rez format unless you really listen for it.

My favorite nirvana project & for good reason, it starts off with the wonderful lyrics and instrumentals on "Serve the Servants", which I feel gives a good description of society towards his music and his relationship with his father. Next comes the heavy "Scentless apprentice", giving a feeling of abnormality and being judged at birth, which makes the "Hey, Go Away!!!" at the top of his lungs, remincent to what a child would do, especially one who has been abnormal to the world he's been living in. Next comes the song "Heart-Shaped Box", for what I can tell as being one of the most twisted, moody ways to make a love song with lyrics like 'I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black' but also gets more interested get when the hook comes in, 'Hey, wait, I've got a new complaint; forever in debt to your priceless advice", saying that I constantly complain, and no matter how great things look, I'm just focusing on the negative, this album being...
