The Music I have been a Doors fan since I first heard Light My Fire in 1967. I was fortunate to see them twice and once as a trio after. I have heard these albums from their first pressings in their respective years through all of the remasters done in the digital age. These are the best I've ever heard these sound. I am in awe of the audio defintion. It's almost 3 dimensional. I can recite these songs in my sleep but there are nuances in the vocals and guitar I had never heard before. The stereo separation is outstanding considering these recordings are over 40 years old (Machete don't do 5.1). I have one quibble. I had hoped that the first album would contain a mono mix. It's been years since I heard the first album in mono but I remember that it was much fuller and had more sonic depth than the stereo version. The other thing, and this may not matter, is that the master used for the first album is the original not the one used in future digital versions that restored the...
The packaging is impressive(far exceding the original LP covers), the vinyl is not so impressive. Upon openning each album, I found that the vinyl had a higher static charge than most new records I've ever bought. After a quick anti-static treatment I played the records. Each disc has been noisy with lot's of pops and crackles. I put the first record that I played immediately on my VPI HW-17 and cleaned it. After re-playing, there was still annoying pops and crackles. I had to clean the record 3 more times before the distractions for the most part disappeared. This is not only an indication of pressing quality but also shows that the VPI units leave a little to be desired. Consequently, I put each record on my VPI and clean it once before I play it. Most records take a second cleaning to remove static and distracting noise.
Now, let's compare the actual recordings. Mastering was done fairly well but a little too dull for my hearing. Back in 2009, WEA released a promo only...
I've been listening to the Doors and loved their music for over 20 years and I've heard their music on all forms of media, Vinyl, A-track, cassette tape, CD and now finally MP3. I've collected all sorts of B-side recordings, interviews, DVDs, pretty much anything Doors related I own. But this vinyl pressing easily supersedes my pride in owning anything else.
Let me start with the packaging, it's downright beautiful, the magnetic box with the serial number just makes you feel exclusive, the packaging of each individual LP is meticulous and finally, the sound quality is simply AMAZING! Being 45 rpm LPs, they inherently sound better, but the records are so quiet, it's just amazing! No hum, hiss, pop or crackle and the experience is just sublime on a good 2 channel stereo setup.
Pricewise, I agree that it's on the higher side, but for what you get, you might consider paying it if you truly want to own a collector's item.
