It's fantastic that they're slowly, but surely reissuing the Victor recordings done by the great Sauter-Finegan Orchestra. For me, this music brings back a lot of good memories at a time when I was just developing as a musician. In the mid 70's, I got a call to play with what was called "The Orchestra" led by Harvey Estrin (alto, tenor, flute). It was basically a rehearsal band that rehearsed every Sunday at the 92nd St. Y in Manhattan (New York). There were 2 concerts a year in the spring and fall. I was still in high school at the time. To this day, I don't know who recommended me. Harvey played with the S-F orchestra from 1954 until the band broke up around 1957. Shortly thereafter, he would become the on call studio guy making hundreds of sessions. By the time I met him, he was known as the "jingle king". He also did a lot of Broadway shows as well. He was a fantastic musician who could sight read any piece of music that was put in front of him. Besides the great... Read more
Sauter-Finegan fans rejoice! Another outstanding release, in fact, the best so far, for this legendary orchestra. This two cd production is a reissue of three S-F albums, "The Sound of the Sauter-Finegan Orchestra", "Concert Jazz", and "Inside Sauter-Finegan", thirty-nine tunes on two cd's for the price of one!

The first sixteen tunes are from the first album including several singles not included in that album. The next ten tunes are from "Concert Jazz" and the remaining are from "Inside." Several selections have been previously released on two other cd's.

The production values of this package are first rate and include track times, personnel listings, recording dates and soloists for each selection. There are also new notes regarding both Sauter and Finegan, the orchestra and the recordings. The only art work is a re-pro of the album front cover for "Inside Sauter-Finegan." All of the liner notes, photos and artwork from the original albums are not included... Read more
It may be because in 1952 I owned a 78 of Doodletown Fifers b/w Azure Te by the Sauter Finnegan Orchestra, and that I played it a few hundred times, that the music wore a groove in me. A different cd from Collectors Choice that was a compilation of radio performances is all that has been available on cd until now. Apparently, that was the second incarnation of the band, in 1957. This first incarnation, whose first recording and only hit was Doodletown, is far superior in recording quality and freshness and enthusiasm. On repeated listening, I find them a very interesting band in this first line-up. All the singles and also an album called Eddie and the Witch Doctor, which I think was a 10" RCA that I only saw in liner ads are included on this cd. The orchestra could swing, they were a concert jazz band, and totally out of step with the times. Very artful stuff, some very good musicians. Informative liner notes. Definitely worth a listen.
