Additional Information

Four friends. Twenty years. One unexpected journey.

Inseparable throughout college, Eva, Benedict, Sylvie, and Lucien graduate in 1997, into an exhilarating world on the brink of a new millennium. Hopelessly in love with playboy Lucien and eager to shrug off the socialist politics of her upbringing, Eva breaks away to work for a big bank. Benedict, a budding scientist who's pined for Eva for years, stays on to complete his PhD in physics, devoting his life to chasing particles as elusive as the object of his affection. Siblings Sylvie and Lucien, never much inclined toward mortgages or monogamy, pursue more bohemian existences-she as an aspiring artist and he as a club promoter and professional partyer.

But as their twenties give way to their thirties, the group struggles to navigate their thwarted dreams. Scattered across Europe and no longer convinced they are truly the masters of their fates, the once close-knit friends find themselves filled with longing for their youth- and for one another. Broken hearts and broken careers draw the foursome together again, but in ways they never could have imagined.

A dazzling depiction of the highs and lows of adulthood, Invincible Summer is a story about finding the courage to carry on in the wake of disappointment, and a powerful testament to love and friendship as the constants in an ever-changing world.

I read the book almost non-stop within 2 days. This is a great story about life, feelings and how 20 years change people and how they stay the same. The attention to details is amazing, I wish I know London better since I suspect I missed a lot of great observations about life in the city judging by what I got. Perhaps that or author's style made the connection with characters deep and very emotional, reading the book was like living through ups and downs of their life in a very real sense.

“If you could know the answer to any question, what would it be?”
— Alice Adams

From the engrossing first line to the mystical story that followed, Alice Adams debut novel captured my attention for a multitude of reasons. The whole story unfolds and blossoms with emotion, character development, and a story that makes you want to see what happens next in these people's lives. I don't want to say that this is a sad story, but the description puts it best when it says that this is an unexpected journey. The reader can really grow with the characters through all of the events that take place in front of them. The four main characters each have their own storylines that intertwine with each other to create a heartbreaking and multi-dimensional saga of people still trying to find what it means to be an adult.

I had high hopes for this book, given that it was about Friendship. But by the end of the book, I felt it was about people who were fairly unappealing. The characters seemed spoiled, self-centered, vain, and most of them--by the age of 35--were acting like their lives were over. I know I didn't feel that way when I was 35! Yes, some terrible things happen to these folks, but from my point of view, they earned them, all of them making poor decisions from Day 1. Perhaps that's the thing they have in common. I would have to agree with the reviewer who said, if you're in your 20s or 30s, you'll enjoy it. I am 64, and I felt none of these folks really knew was Friendship was about. And they all waited a long, long time to even begin to figure it out. Having recently read A Little Life, which is also about Friendship, I have to say: that book touched me more deeply, in many more ways. Many of us got through our mid-30s without being attractive, rich, educated, sexually proficient, or... Read more
