Master of the waves

Designed for the "decisive battle" that never came, the IJN Atago was a heavily-armed
predator without prey. She was the most heavily armed heavy cruiser in the world when
she was commissioned in 1932. Her ten 20cm guns and significant secondary armament
were intended to give her the advantage in conventional surface engagements with
numerically superior enemies. Early in the war, this advantage helped inflict serious damage,
but, as the Allies gained air superiority Atago was increasingly at a disadvantage. She was
sunk in Palawan Passage by USS Darter before she ever reached her "decisive battle".
