'It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia,' which debuted on the FX channel in 2005 and is still going strong as of 2012, is a highly original and hilariously funny adult comedy series about three callous and self-centered male friends who own a struggling dive bar in Philadelphia: Mac (creator Rob McElhenney), who is obsessed with physical culture, "intel," and defense, believes himself to be the group's leader; Dennis (Glenn Howerton), who is smug, narcissistic and arrogant to an advanced degree, and Charlie (Charlie Day), the illiterate, unwashed 'low man on the totem pole' who does the janitorial work and is romantically obsessed with a local waitress (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) who wants nothing to do with him.
Joining the three to compose "the gang" are Dennis' twin sister, vulgar Sweet Dee (Kaitlin Olson), who has illusions about her appearance, talent, and social viability, and the twins' raucous, ready-for-anything stepfather, Frank (Danny DeVito).
Sunny has to be one of the funniest shows on television (or Amazon). I laugh so hard, even though I've probably seen each episode a lot of times. I think some people have a hard time getting over how awful each character is, but to me that is part of the fun. It's a raw look at the worst of human nature that also includes some of the dumbest of human nature. Sunny is great escapism and great commentary at the same time. I recommend everyone give it at least two episodes. Another great thing: each season seems to get better.
The only criteria seems to be that within the context of the show - is it funny? There's rarely any consequences to what they do. Each character has few if any redeeming values. But is it funny? Oh yes. The addition of Danny DeVito made a good show great. Introducing the character seemed a bit awkward, but after that it's clear sailing. I particularly like the very special Christmas episode where they each have revelations about their childhoods, but really it's hard to single out any one episode. Its definitely not a "network" show - setup, punch line, laugh track - or a one joke show (I get it - they're nerds and she's hot, or he's fat and so is she - ha ha). That said its not for everybody. A lot of people like one joke shows. But if you like absurd, anything for a laugh comedy - this could for you.
