This is one of my Christmas tradition books. Every year, I read this book or the James Harriot's Favorite Cat Stories. My old book finally reached a point where it started falling apart. So I purchased this replacement. Each chapter is an individual story so are perfect for bedtime reading. They are all wonderful stories. Especially if you have children who love animals. I will say that not all of his stories have happy endings, but they ALL have real endings. These are real stories from his life. You can tell from his writing that he loved his job and the animals he met.
I wrote this same review for James Herriot's Cat Stories: I am a big fan of James Herriot's books and have most of them in my collection. His stories are heart-warming accounts of love, compassion, and kindness to our furry friends. However, this is not a new book of stories. What the publishers have done is take various dog stories from his previous books (All Creatures Great and Small and others) and created a book specifically with dog stories. Same with James Herriot's Cat Stories. So, if you want to give a book specifically to a dog lover, this would be a nice gift. If you are looking for a new collection of stories, look elsewhere.
James Herriot is always such an engaging writer who makes you feel like a friend. His book of Dog Stories is a great example of this. From the adventures of the infamous Tricky Woo to the heart breaking tale of an unloved urchin fighting to save his dog from distemper each tale engages and touches the reader. Herriot writes at a time of primitive animal practice without all the drugs and techniques modern vets take for granted. He shows us his journey as a young vet and his unfailing love of the animals he treated in those years. Both his human and canine characters are vivid and forever part of the Herriot collection of stories you remember. As a dog lover I laughed a bit, cried a bit and loved it.
